[Imc-newsroom] 12th Biennial Conference de la Asociacion de Columbianistas

For all those interested in Plan Colombia and Latin American politics and 
culture (reporters or otherwise), an important conference is happening this 
week on the UofI campus.

For the 34 sessions of La Conferencia de la Asociacion de Colombianistas, 
numerous government officials, historians and writers have been invited to 
discuss everything from Plan Colombia to Colombian postcolonial identity in 
the arts.  Among them is Alfonso Lopez Caballero, head of Colombia's peace 
commission who has been "negotiating peace" with Colombian guerrillas.

All sessions will be conducted in Spanish.  This has been touted as the most 
important conference on Colombia the world over.  Spanish-speakers should be 
encouraged to report on these events, either with minidisc recorder or pen 
and notepad.  It might be worthwhile--if not opportune--to strike a dialogue 
with the Colombia IMC on issues being discussed here.
