As a good, but sad, accompaniment to Danielle's suggested headline about
the Lawrence, KS Reclaim the Streets is the following story from the
Madison Critical Mass:

"Madison's Critical Mass bicycle ride ended last Friday evening with the
arrest of one rider, who was cited & released. He was charged with "failure
to obey an officer's signal" and "impeding traffic." According to an
eyewitness account, the Critical-Mass ride met significant harassment from
motorists, where one rider reportedly was bumped by a car stopped at an
intersection. Shortly thereafter police followed the ride making several
attempts to stop it, creating a significant traffic disruption in the
process. One rider was arrested after police managed to separate the Mass,
while roughly fifty cyclists looked on."
An audio report is available on the Madison IMC here:

One might add the following:
"On the other hand the Urbana-Champaign Critical-Mass ride went off with
few problems last Friday without a hitch. A mass of about 30 bicyclists
rode a loop through the streets of the twin cities, demonstrating the right
of bicycles to share the streets with cars and other motorized
vehicle. Aside from jeers from a few bystanders and one car that attempted
to cut into the middle of the mass, the riders of Critical Mass met little
resistance in their ride, and were not harassed by police.
Critical Mass is a worldwide movement joining bicyclists together in an
effort to show that bikes are good, sustainable transportation that have a
right to use the road.
The local Critical Mass rides the last Friday of every month at 5:15,
meeting at the Alma Mater in Campustown. The next ride is Friday, Sept. 29."
