Green building is an idea, and a green building is one manifestation. At
the UIUC, the green concept is embodied in the Campus Sustainability
Initiative, Governor Ryan's "Green Government" Proclamation of December
2001
(http://www100.state.il.us/PressReleases/ShowPressRelease.cfm?SubjectID=3&RecNum=1603),
and a proposal for a green building for the Department of Natural Resources
and Environmental Sciences (http://www.greenbldg.uiuc.edu/).

This one-day conference covers current best practice, innovative
technologies, standards, and institutional barriers and
opportunities. Leaders in this young field will present outstanding
examples of green buildings and success stories in getting them accepted
and built.

Green includes:
o less resource and energy demand,
o less impact on climate change,
o less disruption of local and distant environments,
         o less noise,
o in the long run, less expense.

Green also includes:
o more recycling of water, sewage, materials, office paper,
         o more use solar energy,
o more use of natural light,
o more efficiency of energy and other resource use,
o a more healthful internal environment,
o a more pleasant working environment,
         o higher worker productivity,
o enhanced access for pedestrians and cyclists,
o more solar and biomimicking technology,
o high community participation in planning, design, and use.
