hi all,

if anyone is planning to attend this event -- it would be great to have
some coverage up on the IMC's website:

********************************************

Anti-Columbus/Anti-"Chief" Rally and March
Columbus Day, Monday October 14th, 2002
UI Student Union, South Patio 6:00pm

********************************************

The Progressive Resource/Action Cooperative is holding its annual
Anti-Columbus/Anti- "Chief" rally on October 14th at 6:00pm! This
year's event will include an Anti-"Chief" rally and march in protest
of Christopher Columbus and his orchestration of genocide of Native American
people and culture. The use of "Chief Illiniwek" is yet another step in
the genocide of Native American people that began with Christopher
Columbus and continues today with the University of Illinois'
appropriation of Native culture and sacred symbols. The defamation of
Native culture as a tool of profit for the University is just one more
example of the perpetuation of Native oppression. Students, staff, and
community members are encouraged to voice their opinions on this racist
tradition.

This event will follow up on the demands put forth by the PRC upon the
Board of Trustees on September 19th, to vote to retire "Chief Illiniwek"
at once! Come find out how they responded!

The rally will begin at 6:00pm in the South Patio of the Union
and will be followed by a march to the Alma Mater, to let the University know
that the tradition of "Chief" Illiniwek founded on appropriation and genocide
must end at once!

The following organizations are co-sponsoring this event:
85% Coalition, Anti-War Anti-Racist Effort, El Pueblo Unido, Illinois
Disciples Foundation, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., School for
Designing a Society, Students Improving the Lives of Animals, U-C Hip Hop
Congress, U-C Independent Media Center, UIUC Latina/Latino Studies
Program, UIUC Student NAACP, Vietnam Veterans Against the War (C-U
Chapter), Women Rising in Resistance, (N.Y.A.S.O) Not Your Average
Students Organization, Democratic Solidarity Committee, and Activist Forum
Club.
