September 18, 2002: The University of Illinois Student Government is
voting 7pm Wed in the Pine Lounge of the Illini Union on the proposed
Student-Choice Resolution that would guarantee undergraduates option to
use non-animal alternatives in place of dissection. Students Improving
the Lives of Animals (SILA), the animal welfare group on campus,
proposed the resolution because although Illinois law requires the
University to reasonably accommodate those with religious objections,
currently there are no protections in policy. Testimonies SILA has
gathered show experiences vary wildly, but few are given accommodations.

The University of Kansas, Cornell University, Sarah Lawrence College and
others have granted student-choice on dissection. This resolution models
after these proposals and the Dissection Alternatives Act passed by the
Illinois State Government granting students in grades k-12 the option to
use alternatives.
