Is the CIA to Blame for Genocide in Guatemala?

Who: the UIUC chapter of Amnesty International, Neils Jacobsen (head
of Latin American and Caribbean Studies at UIUC), and Dr.
Arends-Kuenning (UIUC Economics).
What: speakers and a film will examine genocide in Guatemala, mass
killings in El Salvador, Central American cooperatives, the pros and
cons of CAFTA (the Central American Free Trade Agreement), and the 1990
elections in Nicaragua.
When: this Sunday, April 10 of 2005 from 1 to 3:30pm.
Where: the University YMCA at 1001 S. Wright St. in Champaign.
Why: the CIA-backed coup in Guatemala in 1954 has cost countless lives
in Central America. This event serves as background for a symposium
scheduled for Monday, April 11 of 2005 from 9:30am to 6:30pm in the
Illini Union called “From a Springtime of Democracy to a Winter of Cold
War: The 1954 Guatemala Coup and its Lasting Impact on U.S./Latin
American Relations.”
