What are you doing on Tuesday (7/25) evening?

Thought you might be interested in attending a discussion at UI on the
Contested History of Indian Removal, Manifest Destiny and the Persistence of
Rhetoric, Symbols and Attitudes Associated With These Events.

Date: Tuesday, July 25, 2006

Time: 7 - 9 p.m

Site: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

        Humanities Lecture Hall

        805 West Pennsylvania Ave. Urbana

Nicholas Brown will screen two new videos that deal with the contested
history and memory of Indian removal.

Focusing on the Trail of Tears in southern Illinois and the death of Chief
Pontiac near East St. Louis, both videos present a racialized landscape that
confounds efforts to simply "remember" and/or "forget."

"Jeep/Cherokee/Indian" and "Pontiac(s)" reveal how these histories and
identities are subtly encountered and [re]produced in the everyday.

"Jeep / Cherokee / Indian" (17 minutes) -- An experimental documentary
premised on a search for (Jeep) Cherokees along the Trail of Tears in
Illinois on the occasion of the 167th anniversary of the forced relocation.

"Pontiac(s)" (4.5 minutes) -- Pontiacs spotted in Cahokia, Illinois on
April 20, 2006 - exactly 237 years after Chief Pontiac was stabbed to death
by a Peoria Indian in the streets of Cahokia. --

These videos are supplemented by a series of web-based projects. Online

"Marching to the Arch on the Trail of Death" ---

Searching for traces of the past and possibilities for the future in the
present landscape of east central Illinois - all the while revealing the
persistence and projection of rhetoric, symbols, and attitudes associated
with Westward Expansion and Manifest Destiny.

"North Carolina 75 / Illinois 70"

Listening to the championship game at Leal Park in Urbana.

"Illinois 72 / Louisville 57"
