>> NOMINATE CHICAGO-AREA JOURNALISTS <<

Now through January 12, we're
accepting suggestions for our Studs Terkel Media awardees.

Terkel Awards
highlight journalists who take risks in covering social issues by offering
new or unusual perspectives on topics of general concern. The awards honor
journalists for going the extra mile in sourcing stories and thoughtful
treatment of context. The awards reward a body of work rather than a single
article or series, and go to journalists at any stage of their career.

Visit our Web site to nominate someone. Look over the list of past
winners and if your candidates are not there, let us know their names,
where they work, and why they qualify.

Awards will be given at our benefit
Wednesday, March 28. Learn more

Coming up at the Workshop...

>>
PROFESSIONAL MEDIA RELATIONS STARTS JANUARY 26 <<

"In lieu of birthday
gifts, 8-year-old asks pals for cash for charity," a headline in the
February Chicago Tribune ran. Justin Geer of World Relief, a global
evangelical nonprofit dedicated to helping refugees of war and natural
disasters, pitched that story. He learned how in Professional Media
Relations.

Find out how he did it in the 2007 PMR, five half-days from
Friday, Jan. 26 through Feb. 23. Participating organizations get a free
copy of Spin Works, the nonprofit PR handbook, and the 2007 "Getting on the
Air and Into Print" directory of area journalists. Learn more & register
at

Find out
what local nonprofits are up to by checking out Newstips on our home page,
www.newstips.org. More thorough than a news release but shorter than a full
report, these tips provide area journalists with story ideas. Pitch

>> NEW AT
WWW.NEWSTIPS.ORG... <<

Pitching a story to a blogger on the Internet is a
different animal than pitching to a print or broadcast reporter. Unlike the
"traditional" media world, on the blogosphere you don't get to leverage
your verbal agility to establish a relationship with a reporter over the
phone first, and then ask if they'd like to see your press release. And you
certainly can't spam World Wide Web bloggers with a single, impersonal
press release that you've already emailed to the whole wide world.

Mike
Doyle, former Workshop trainee whose "7 Days at Minimum Wage" video-log,
vlog, and Chicago Carless blog have helped him win news coverage on-line
and in The New York Times and The Chicago Tribune, offers Seven Success
Strategies for Pitching to Bloggers. Check it out
