Hi Sandra and other IMCRN folks,

I don't know if Meghan has already been in touch with you (Sandra) about the IMC orientation, if so I apologize for the slight duplication if that is the case. I also apologize for the short notice, this week certainly got away from me. The outreach group is holding an IMC general orientation tomorrow (Sat July 17) from 3-5 pm. I'm writing to ask for two things: 1 a representative from radio to be available to talk with interested folks begining at 4pm tomorrow, 2 to approve what I'm putting in the UCIMC Member Handbook about radio. Details follow.

1. Reprentative from Radio at the orientation
The second hour of the orientation we've planned to be a bit like an open house for the working groups. Meaning representatives will be scattered through out the IMC and the participants will be able to go from group to group to find out more information. You don't need to make any kind of formal presentation. In fact it should be more informal, just being able to talk about the group, and answer questions from new folks. Again this will take place about 4pm. Although you are welcome, there is not a need to come for the begining of the orientation, but please arrive by 3:45.

2. Approve Radio entry for Member Handbook

I'm putting together a member handbook to distribute at the orientation. The entry for Radio I culled from the poster that is in the space and from your website, but I did add a bit about not needing experience (second paragraph). Please let me know by tonight (Friday) if you want to see any changes or additions. And once again I apologize for the extremely short notice.

IMC Radio News Airs Fridays on WTND-LP 106.3FM in Macomb at 6:30pm
The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center radio Group produces the IMC Radio News weekly for WEFT 90.1 FM our local community radio station. IMCRN Is also syndicated on other lowpower stations around the state. News pieces produced by radio group members have also been featured nationally on Free Speech Radio News, National Native News and other programs, The IMC Radio News is the oldest and longest running project of the UCIMC.

People get involved with the Radio News group with all levels of experience. If you have an idea for a story but no idea how to see it come to fruition, no problem! There are people who are happy to teach you how to collect audio and how to edit it for a radio program. Even if you don’t have a clear idea for a story, but would like to learn radio production, we are here to help you. If you’ve been in the radio news business for years, the group can certainly benefit from your skills.

To get involved
Come to our meeting Tuesday at noon at the IMC. You can be a reporter or producer even if you cannot attend the meeting. Email radio at ucimc.org to find out how!

What you can do in the radio group
* Suggest news projects about local events or global events with a local bent
* Interview community members who make a difference
* Learn or teach audio production skills
* Be a technical producer for a week
* Volunteer to cover a beat every week
* Produce and air a feature about something that interests you
* Tell your story
* Compile and coordinate headlines
* Do voice overs
* Airshift the news program at WEFT
* Help keep the production room clean and organized
* Help document the production process
* Maintain the radio groups web archive of programs

How is a IMCRN show formatted?
IMCRN can be flexible in format though it should be programmed to be a total of 29 minutes. A show could have multiple features, or just one in-depth report. A show may also include in-studio guests. We try to provide “the week in review” with a handful of headline stories. Although the show format is up to the producer, here is the a show format that is used frequently because it works well:
* IMCRN Theme music
* Introduction of show and host. WEFT disclaimer.
* Headlines
* Feature 1
* Reintroduction of show
* Public Service Announcement (PSA)
* Feature 2
* Conclusion
* Outro music

Meetings
The show is maintained by the volunteer collective which meets weekly, Tuesdays noon – 1 PM at the IMC. These are facilitated meetings and are open to all. The agenda is set by those present. A typical agenda looks like this:
* Introductions
* Review of last show – strengths and weaknesses, process problems
* Story ideas, story development (story assignments are tracked)
* Upcoming events to cover
* Scheduling of producers and apprentices for shows (we try to stay scheduled 4 weeks in advance)
* Scheduling training, technical support, apprenticeships
* Short clean up on production room

Let me know if you have any questions!

Cheers
Ellen
