Unless you have an external sound card (a USB-based portable thingee
with a powered mic input, costing a couple hundred bucks), using your
laptop to record sound can be disappointing.  The microphone inputs on
most laptops are really noisy.  I've tried, and it was barely usable,
even by IMCRN/WEFT standards.

Your mileage may vary; I know people who have done it successfully.
