Is it IMC tech policy that when I am suspected of breaking the check-out
rules I should receive very lengthy e-mail accusing me of lying about how
long I checked out a minidisc recorder that I bought and donated to the
IMC?

Please don't tell me this is how we are handling things at the IMC.

thanks for returning the equipment.  as part of our new equipment use
policy (posted on the cabinet), anyone returning equipment after the date
they said they would is charged $1 a day.  on sunday, 2/24 it was noticed
that field bag #1 was checked out by you with the due date as 2/23.  the
bag had not been returned yet, and so you began to accrue a fine.  on
2/25, the bag was returned, and the date of its return was marked as 2/23.
please be honest when you return materials.  things are monitored and a
future structure may be implemented to help people with the whole checkout
procedure.  considering the cabinet was checked in the morning, rather
than the customary evening time, i'm willing to assume the bag was return
on the evening of 2/24 (rather than on the day of 2/25), and thus you've
only been charged $1 late fee.  The money can be put in a jar on the top
shelf in the equipment cabinet.  Please mark the sheet on the front of the
cabinet indicating that you have done so.  Until you do so, policy states
that you cannot check out any further equipment.

we're thinking about adopting a structure similar to the library's in
which staff assist with the checking out of equipment.  equipment still
continues to disappear without notice, and so we're needing to figure out
a new system that's beneficial for all.  if interested in helping design
this, please come to a space focus group meeting, on the 1st and 3rd
wednesdays of each month at 6:30 (so, next week).

thanks for you help with this, and please pay the fine as soon as you can.
we still operate on an honor system, and this will be your only notice.
