I suspect the alias is there, at least in some of the mail-handling paths,
since *some* mail is getting through promptly.  Or, perhaps, could there be
alternate routes for the mail (IP aliasing?  multiple MX records?) so that
some messages get handled by a machine which doesn't know the aliases,
while others are handled by a different machine which does?
