[UCIMC-Tech] Fwd: thinking of a community calendar - would ucimc.org (with drupal) be a good base, politically and technically?

I'd sent this a few weeks ago, but it looks as though it never made it
into the archives... How feasible would it be to make an easier-to-use
community calendar on ucimc.org?

Hello IMC tech people,

After last weekend's Progressive Fest at Channing-Murray, one thing
clear from the discussion was a wish for a community calendar, so that
people in many groups can see each others' events, to encourage
cross-attendance, help avoid conflicts when planning events, etc.

The IMC (had? still has?) a calendar like this in principle, but I don't
think it's been used much - you had to dig awhile to submit to it the
last I tried, and maybe more important, if it's still around it's not
easy to find.

The groups who came to Progressive Fest and others could try to build
on, say, Google Calendar, but hosting a community calendar seems like a
natural fit for the IMC, if it's not too burdensome.

I guess the key pieces would be ...
a calendar, with a handful of ways to view it
(week/month/day/event-detail) - I guess drupal supports them

a visible place for it - with a simple URL, like "ucimc.org/calendar",
and a moderately prominent link on the IMC main page, I'd suggest

a submission mechanism, with provision for editing event postings
(submitted by whom? postings could be either by identified
users, or anonymous)

(preferably) eventually, some sort of optional tagging scheme, such
that people could sift through what might become a big cloud of events
by some sort of topic, as you already do for news submissions

a way (probably a person) to sift & remove spam, especially if we
allow anonymous postings
       i'd be up for that

     and especially
technical help in getting it all set up.

Funding for getting it going? We didn't talk about it last week, but I
expect some money could be raised, from at least some of the
organizations involved. I'm pretty sure AWARE could contribute, and I
would personally.

Does this sound feasible? I'd be interested in talking with anyone who
thinks so...

cheers

      Stuart
