 Management Thought of the Month

Brought to you by The Corporate Performance Institute

January 2004 Edition

"Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything"

I was contemplating this quote by the famous western gunfighter Wyatt Earp (of the gunfight at the OK corral fame) and how it applies to success.

It amazes me how often businesses I work with have execution challenges. Typically, a strategy is decided upon by managers, tasks are outlined and assigned to individuals, then some staff simply don't do the tasks. Often saying they have when in reality they have not. In many cases, it is difficult for managers to check on execution.

A good example is a salesperson who says they have met with and outlined a new policy or product to clients, when they have not. It is difficult for managers to find this out in the short run but it comes out in the long run.

What do you do with staff who continuously do not execute on tasks they have agreed to do.

In these cases, I recommend the sage words of Jack Welch ex CEO of General Electric "coach, coach then change".

My experience is if you have this sort of a person, they are fundamentally not a team player. Give them two chances to change their ways and join the team by executing/following through on agreed tasks and if no change happens, then they need to be replaced with a team player.

Accuracy, in hitting goals and targets in business, is all about execution by you and your team.

Food for thought.
