[Imc-web] IMC Web/Tech Meeting: Mon. June 8 @ 8 PM

I'll see everyone at the IMC tonight for the Tech meeting.

Things I'd like to talk about:

Organization of Tech Collective

If we talk about nothing else, I want to talk about how we do
tech at IMC. Should there be a monthly meeting? A weekly
meeting? An IRC channel that we all monitor? Should we do some
outreach and if so how? Do we want to be a real working group
or an ad hoc caucus of working group members? Should we be two
different working groups (tech and web)? Or a working group
	with a couple of subcommittees?

Email list moderation.

Bryan Cribbs is doing the lions share of this work right now
and it's a constant struggle against spam that he didn't sign
up for. He needs help. It'd be cool if we could get a team of
folks together to help with spam control in general (writing
new rules for spamassassin, training the filter (though there
are significant	issues with this), monitoring the caughtspam for ham,
	etc).

Dada editting.

What are our policies? What should they be? Who are our
edittors? How are editors empowered do be such?

Dada maintenance and administration.

Who is taking care of dada bugs and upgrades, how are they
	empowered to do so?

218 W. Main Tech Support, Maintenance, and Administration

Remote boot? (it's be cool if our machines remote booted from
a standard image on a server and if we could take
"stable" snapshots of that image from time to time to
revert back to when someone messes up the machine with
		weird software).

CD boot? (Can we boot at least the public machine from a linux
CD and seal off the CD drive so it can't be
stolen...one benefit is that since it's a CD, even
though it is unix they can still just power cycle
without messing things up...you can't even promise
		that with windows))?

Rebuild scripts? (Can we set something up so you can boot from
a special CD and use that CD to rebuild the machine to
		some 'standard' setup)?

On call volunteer tech support staff? (ie what if there was a
list of folks that people could call if they need
help, we could even put in the schedule of when we
should and shouldn't be called, maybe take turns being
		the "on call" person)

Software Projects and Outreach

Can we do some outreach to software groups like the ACM SIGs
at UIUC or other such clubs and coordinate some open source projects
that will benefit the IMC as a whole? With some dedicated volunteers
and a little work we could probably juice up one of the open source
audio editting packages and build a CD distribution for an audio
editting workstation that would be useful to IMCs all over the world.

We need motivated people with some free time to come to our
meetings if we're going to do this though. I think we'll have
a better time doing outreach if our group is working on this kind of
	interesting stuff though.

Grantwriting

Months ago, Clint and I started the process of creating a
master list for the grantwriters of all the equipment we'd
have in a perfect world. The more information we can provide
and keep up to date, the easier it'll be for grantwriters to
include equipment budgets in grants that they write.

Global Tech

It'd be nice if we had some involvement, even just lurkingly,
with the global imc tech collective (its email list, its IRC
	channel, its online meetings, etc).
