*Public Forum on Urbana-Champaign Big Broadband Proposal*
*Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. *
in the Urbana Council Chambers, 400 S Vine, Urbana

The Champaign-Urbana Cable Television and Telecommunications Commission’s
Broadband Access Committee is hosting a public forum to discuss the
Urbana-Champaign Big Broadband (UC2B) proposal. The forum will present the
public with an overview of the proposals and provide the opportunity to ask
questions and make comments.

Read the proposal and summary docs:
http://cuopenaccess.org/content/uc2b-proposal

The UC2B proposal seeks a total of $28.3 million dollars to improve
broadband/Internet service and bolster public computing resources in our
community. If the grant is approved, Federal, State, and local dollars will
be used to provide low-cost Internet services to underserved neighborhoods,
network essential community agencies, support 46 public computing centers,
and create dozens of new jobs in our community.

A consortium made up of the cities of Champaign and Urbana, and the
University of Illinois worked together on the proposal, and each would
contribute significant funding to the project. The Broadband Access
Committee advised the consortium on the grant applications, facilitated
public education, and gathered public input used in the proposals.

In August, the State of Illinois approved a $3.5 million dollar grant for
the project, contingent on Federal grant approval. The UC2B grant
application was filed with the Federal government in August, and the
consortium hopes to hear whether the application made the first round of
cuts this fall. Final award notification is not expected until the end of
the year.
