their website to start. Also would like a UC IMC contingent to visit them
and help give guidance/motivation.
Danielle: Ask Zach about server.
Sara: When we get going we should invite the Springfield folks to our
workshops.
Librarians
Sascha: Meetings set for 5:15 Thursday 12/7, 12/14, 1/4 @ 604 S. Race,
Urbana. Questions on the table include: how to use space? How do we
archive? Thinking about a Dewey system, with materials from last 3 months
separated out in chronological order.
Eric: do you want the research associated with articles?
Sascha: Yes. Attach research materials to articles. Give hardcopies of
all articles to Sascha.
Danielle: Think about a form, like the DC IMC has.
Sascha: It's already been delegated.
Tech
Brian: Waiting for photo badges. Need a notebook computer to connect to
camera. Generic badges still available.
Danielle: Site is close to being useful, but not quite. Thus grand opening
celebration was delayed. May bundle site opening with space opening in mid
January. The Goal is to have the site functional by mid-December.
Fundraising
Sascha: several new founders. Firm commitments for $790/mo, ~$2500 in the
bank. We can definitely afford space we're looking at.
Space
Recap: Proposal for old Chub Conner space. We want downtown Urbana, cheap,
1st floor streetlevel space.
Cinema owners have decided to open coffee shop themselves in Cinema space.
From last week: would Dave Monk be interested in donating space? What
about 2nd floor at WEFT?
Questions: Do we have sufficient income? Sustainability? Questions for
Landlord?
Eric suggests having a long-term strategy for buying a building.
Sascha: Met with Dave Monk last weekno space. Met with Conner space
landlords, the Beavers, has answers to the following questions:
Construction? Don't know when will start for sure, maybe next
fall, maybe later.
Rent? No discounts during contruction, it's already bottom dollar.
After construction is negotiablethey value long-term tenants.
Antenna for RFU: no problem.
What will they do? Anything we want, as long as building not harmed.
Term of lease? No answer yet.
Power bill: $200-$450/mo.
Pauline: We should talk to Chub Conner folks about their experiences there.
Mike, Paul R and Eric volunteer to do a walkthrough to inspect building,
plumbing and electrical this week. Sascha will set it up.
Financials? Sascha sez we're OK for $300/mo in Util. Believes space will
help draw in donors.
Danielle: Conversations with CLAM center regarding moving their operations
into IMC, pay rent and for ISDN.
Laura: Insurance?
Sascha: My figures assume $0 fundraising. Other potential fundraising
sources include: tape sales, newspaper/magazine/book sales, small
coffeehouse, WEFT payment for programming, invitation from WILL for
coverage, biannual fundraiser, IMC library memberships, rent out meeting
space, movies & speakers (a la Stone Soup).
Long-Term Building Plans
Eric notes these reasons for owning our own space: community building and
lending as tried in LA; building is a community asset; we can
determine building use.
Discussion ensues (not transcribed)
Eric: These are functions for IMC space that people have suggested:
equipment space; public space; meeting space; common work space; display
space for media and work; integrate members of local and other communities.
Mike: PROPOSAL: Next meeting we will make a final decision on renting the
Chub Conner space for one year beginning Jan 2001.
No concerns general agreement with proposal.
Evaluating IMC
Eric suggests we think about the criteria we can use to evaluate the work
we do. Everyone should take this as an assignment to bounce around e-mails
on the list for a discussion at the next meeting.
