U-C IMC News Meeting Notes
2/25/01
Last week's / ongoing stories recap
Racial Climate Survey
A story by Gina and Nancy was published on website last week. A radio
piece is planned to air Wed. 3/7 on Zach and Arun's WEFT show 6-8pm. Group
working on this story will meet after News meeting.
Sascha: Octopus might do story Thurs 3/8, News-Gazzette might do story next
week. He suggests we continue coverage, explore the impact and result of
this report. What does super. and school board intend to
do? Superintendent made a lot of promises follow through? Talk with
asst. super. Delores Henry.
Upcoming/Suggested Stories:
Super Wal-Mart Construction "Vandalism"
Paul: Mainstream news isn't putting this in perspective, nor treating it as
though it might be the work of people with a cause, like the ELF. We
should explore it, see how it relates to other similar actions elsewhere.
Sehvilla will follow up, written story for website, should be done by a Fri
3/9.
Michael Goldman talk on Globalization, Tues noon at University YMCA.
Brent will record, do wrap for website.
Election Primaries
Discussion on how to coveris it sufficient to simply report results? Jason
thinks so. But we don't have anyone left with much time or inclination.
Perhaps Maiko would be interested Mark will contact her and write a wrap on
the results.
Mark Weisbrot from Center for Econ. Policy, will talk @ IDF 3/2 7:00pm
Perhaps Maiko is interested in covering?
Stories Covered Last Week:
IP Trees Pauline posted update to website.
G.E. Foods conference Sehvilla will post wrap to site.
Patch Adams apperance Mark will write wrap for site.
85% coalition trip to Spr. Marke will write wrap for site
Paul K wrote pieces for site on NW activist culture.
OLD BUSINESS
Empowered Spokes: will be Mark and Sehvilla, each for a period of 3 months.
NEW BUSINESS
Post-Production workshops
Jason is organizing with Paul K to teach radio post-production using the
SAW software. Hopes to offer 2x a month. Aims to start mid-March.
COMIC STRIP
Darren Drda used to do Channel X comic in Octopus interested in doing
timely comics for the IMC site. Consensus that it's a good idea. Darren
will work with Paul R. on logistics of posting them to site.
NEWSROOM ACCESSIBILITY
Gina notes that she had difficulty getting involved in the reporting effort
on the School Racial Climate Survey, something she's been involved
with. Got the run-around, with various people giving her the impression
that everything was taken care of and that no extra help was needed or
desired. She found the experience marginalizing it was unclear how to get
involved. She worked out this difficulty, but wanted us to be
aware. Suggests having a clearly posted story assignment board.
Paul R. will bring in a big white board for this purpose to be posted in
the hallway or back room.
AGENDAS & MEETINGS
Paul K. asks about the agenda templates, suggesting it be oriented towards
issues rather than single events. Paul R. has revised the one Paul K. wrote
and says it adapts to this idea well. Notes that the facilitator should
have the agenda template and the last meeting's notes so that we know what
was supposed to be done last week and how to proceed. Paul R. will post
the revised template to the news list again.
Next week's facilitator is Sehvilla.
