NAACP staff and youth go to the national NAACP convention in Texas!
Message from student attendee, Rotes McClure:
Hello! My name is Rontez McClure and this year I traveled with the
local Champaign County Branch of NAACP ACT-SO to Houston, Texas! I
qualified to attend as an observer and we had a blast!! While there,
they had several workshops for us ranging from hair design/ fashion
clinics, to social media, youth and social justice, networking, and
many more. I attended the Social Media workshop and it was
very beneficial. We learned about posting private information on
public sites such as MySpace and Facebook is not safe because once
information is posted online, anyone has access to it and it never goes
away. We learned about what is appropriate to post publicly. We
learned that even colleges look at potential student profiles and make
decisions of acceptance based on the information shared. This workshop
also drove home the issue of cyber bullying and the effects it can have
on individuals, families, and communities.
Outside of the workshops we got to do lots of networking and connecting
with other students in ACT-SO! We met students from all over the
nation. I even met someone competing from Alaska. The people I met
were extremely talented and humble!
The competition was simply Amazing!! The level of talent and
preparation was motivating and inspiring!! My favorite was our
competitors from our own city. They represented Champaign very well! I
even got to do a solo part with the national ACT-SO choir. We all had
a blessed time and I cannot wait until next year’s competition!
Message from President Patricia Avery:
Greetings everyone,
I arrived in Houston July 8^th just before Texas took its first yawn
and the sky opened it eyes wide to reveal all the beauty of a city that
welcomed hundreds of NAACP members from all over the country. Already
waiting to welcome me and to represent our Branch was our ACTSO Chair,
Barbara Gillespie-Washington, members, and our talented youth who
arrived a few days earlier. They did very well during their
competition, and, I’m told, they brought tears to the eyes of the
beholders. They didn’t bring home the gold this year but they are
still all winners in our eyes. I want to thank the ACTSO committee
for their hard work with our young people and making us all very proud.
I was delighted to be in Houston to renew my sense of purpose as your
President and the belief that together we can make a difference. Today
we are challenged with familiar issues- such as economic and heath
disparities, unemployment, voter suppression efforts, and the
mass-incarceration of African Americans. Once again NAACP is
standing ready to defend our rights. NAACP President Ben Jealous
reminded us of that when he stated, along with the crowd, we are “ever
forward, never backwards.”
It is easy to get complacent and feel hopeless at a time when the
country is going through the worst recession since the Great
Depression. We need to be more deliberate, more vigilant, and more
unified today as we gear up to fight these battles again.
I’m looking forward to sharing a wealth of knowledge as we increase our
resolve to meet the challenges that we face in our community.
However, we can’t do it without your help. Please join the NAACP
today! Thank you.
Patricia Avery, President
