Speak Out
Upcoming Exhibit on the
Yunnan School of Painting
"Remaining Scars from the Past" by Zhao Zhong Xiu
Featuring a series of paintings produced from the Yunnan School of Painting, Speak
Out: Works From the Yunnan School of Painting, is an exploration of the artistic
revolutionaries of Post-Mao China who, with the collective memory of recent Chinese
history, not only speak out in art about corrupted contexts of transnational and
state sovereignty but explore alternatives to what sovereign powers may deem "art".
The opening reception of Speak Out: Works from the Yunnan School of Painting will
be on September 5th from 6pm to 8pm at Murphy Gallery at the University YMCA.
Curator's comments by Dr. Ian Wang, 5:30pm
Music by Jasmine Field Chinese Music Group
Organized by the University YMCA-UIUC and curated by Dr. Ian Wang, Curator of the
Spurlock Museum-UIUC, the exhibition will be on view from September 5, 2013, to
November 8, 2013. As the inaugural exhibition, Dr. Ian Wang plans to exhibit Speak
Out: Works from the Yunnan School of Painting at different locations across the
United States.
The Exhibition
On display in this exhibition is a selection of artwork by a group of Yunnan artists
representing a variety of styles within the Yunnan School of Painting. Among the
artists represented in this exhibition is Zhao Zhong Xiu, who was a student of master
painter Liao Xin Xue, who was the first artist from Yunnan to study art in France.
Mr. Zhao's painting album, Remaining Scars from the Past, will be featured in Art
@ the Y's exhibit Speak Out: Works from the Yunnan School of Painting.
Exhibition Background:
Beginning in the early 1970s, a group of Yunnan Chinese intellectuals and artists
dissatisfied with the repressive political and artistic climate of the time began
to
push for an expanded form of artistic expression. This became possible after
Chairman Mao's death and the end of the "Cultural Revolution" in 1976. The
ceaseless efforts of this group of artists gave rise to an entirely new school of
painting, which came to be known as the Yunnan School of Painting.
The stylistic vocabulary and topical themes of the Yunnan School were
characterized by clear line work, bold use of color, a love for overlapping
geometric design, and a daring combination of both traditional Chinese form and
Western abstract art forms depicting subjects that centered on the indigenous
ethnic groups, culture, and myths of the Yunnan region of Southwestern China.
Two hallmarks of this new art movement were "heavy color painting" and "red
soil painting" that actually incorporated the use of local red soil in the painting
as
basic material/pigment to create texture and high relief.
The current generation of Yunnan artists has yet another, more difficult task
than the previous generation. Globalization, membership in the World Trade
Organization, and China's rapid economic development, brought with it widespread
Western cultural and artistic influence, and opened a new commercialized art
market. The art of this generation of Yunnan artists carries within it a deep
consciousness of recent Chinese history, while responding to these undeniable
developments in contemporary society.
Cosponsors for this exhibition include Dean's Graphics, the Spurlock Museum, and
the Asian American Cultural Center.
