WHAT'S COMING UP IN JUNE?
In the KidZone
Race Street Bash is back!
Sunday, June 9
1:00 to 5:00 PM
This festival was originally planned for the very rainy Memorial Day Weekend and
we made a tough call to postpone. Now we're back---this time with a fool-proof
rain plan!
We'll celebrate performing arts, with hands-on workshops, an Electric Try-It Tent,
KidZone, arts & crafts, and more.
Come on out for some good, old-fashioned street fair fun. We'll have lots of live
music, with guest artists the Duke of Uke and His Novelty Orchestra in addition
to performances by our own stellar music faculty and student ensembles.
This all-ages event will have something for everyone, and it's free to the public!
Details [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001iSVv4Z0682GeJ2t0sLWKOoOVhdhIQKZMUJ7Qa8Xv2xJJiiUngQhsPsK1hjUKGS-2KBAQImHDpdE9yZy4lbfqFeqCKX7Ne9uTalGvkcSYnDjDt4RWeiLl0i0sMfQMVZapzyTm8E5psGjBVysNTJHC74bk_DZq7Bjro7CLUjMzkwwUM6UcVbCLNq7TVnXFOd8GUMdZH36WhFCFoyWl5YGoSh-cLIyLM_jcb44nrX5C7Tq1D6WSr9i1PaF9kLsQl5gMfgip0MJTmXrDfNNr39KHkzSv-xLGyRmJ]
We'll be there rain or shine. In the event of rain the entire festival will move
indoors to Corson's Music and C4A Studios on Race Street.
Many thanks to Urbana Public Arts and the Urbana Business Association for help funding
the Race Street Bash!

Summer camps are starting up!
What's your pleasure?
Blues? Rock? Beatles? We have it all. Come join the fun!
Week-long camps start June 10
We're running camps each week untill school starts in August, all taught by instructors
with related professional experience. Camps in June include:
* Acoustic Rock
* Beatles Week
* Blues Week
* Bow-Zone Classical String Orchestra
Performing Magic, Circus, and Variety Theatre camps are already full.
We are still accepting enrolllments for our other summer camps [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001iSVv4Z0682HFZTfhhJe-8zvvpySRIuo5mypMwKQ855TMhVKVQXRJblg8hvLpsi5dAlznOxJTgq-XZG1n0rnY3X_s9RkeX-h_4rVhJ-5J3kJ13pNMKMJMTqgTLrNCfOsmxHMsmgDeDvF41AhpDN_zP2AS0L3ZapPzAKIGAG2_cXSj_R8x2ZW9PC3nsMggDkiwEB_p2YvWqgw76YUtJjon4xmx3pzg77TLbYeBLsCYmhn5RXJ1yq3ADaupGFpPrPYTDSF2b1Es3zQNR03IIOCp0SoMWofzHA00];
please contact us [mailto:info at c-4a.org] soon if you want to save a spot.
Our camps are all taught by a team of adult professionals who bring their training
and talent to share, and limited class size means more attention for each camper.
Each week ends with a performance. Of special note this year: Blues camp performers
will participate in a live performance at Champaign's "Blues, Brews, and BBQs" festival,
and Bow-Dacious campers will be the dance band for the Urbana Country Dancers.
Our camps are geared for a variety of ages, from 6 to high school.
Other offerings later this summer:
* Rock Band (plugged in!)
* Songwriting & Jamming
* Bow-Dacious String Band (for bowed and plucked strings)
* Make a Music Video
* Multi-discipline: Creative Play & Improvisation

MAY ENCORE
New Youth Volunteer Program
C4A Kid Corps volunteers making a sign for Race St. Bash
At the urging of a group of teens involved in C4A programs we have started a new
youth volunteers program--the C4A Kid Corps. Young volunteers aged middle school
through high school meet monthly to work on both short-term and long-term projects,
and many of them will help with special events. They met for the second time in
May. So far they have made signs, updated bulletin boards, helped organize our storage
areas, cleaned house, and eaten pizza! Members of this group will be helping out
at the Race Street Bash on June 9. If you would like more information about the
C4A Kid Corps please contact us. [mailto:info at c-4a.org]

Race Street Bash got rained out
We were so disappointed that we had to postpone our street fair due to predictions
of extreme weather!
Fortunately, we have rescheduled for June 9, with most of our original plans still
intact. Read more about it in the June preview just above this or at this link

MEET SOME C4A FACULTY MEMBERS:
Tatiana Shustova & Aaron Jacobs (& Pavel)
Aaron & Tatiana
We're looking forward to welcoming the first-ever baby born to C4A faculty parents
later this month!
--Robin Kearton, C4A Director
Aaron is usually very responsive to administrative requests about scheduling, but
that was not the case last fall; his vague replies about summer plans being in flux
were a bit puzzling until this little bit of information came to light:
AJ: Well, the reason I've been hedging on details about our summer plans is that
we weren't sure....I mean...well, we're going to have a baby! This is something
Tatiana and I have been wanting for a while now; we just wanted to be sure before
we told people.
I first met Aaron when he auditioned for and won the principal second violin position
in the Champaign-Urbana Symphony in 2009. "What a great player!" was soon augmented
by "What a nice (and funny) guy!" I met Tatiana a bit later, and was immediately
impressed by both her piano playing and her quick sense of humor. They both joined
the faculty at C4A in 2011.
RK: What brought you to Urbana?
TS: I came in 2008 when I got a fellowship to work on a DMA in piano performance
under Ian Hobson.
AJ: That first year I was finishing my masters' work at Northwestern; I moved here
the following year so we could be together. Later I decided it would be good to
get a doctorate in violin and was accepted into the program.
Tatiana finished her degree and defended her dissertation in spring semester of
2013. Aaron took his prelimary exams at the same time, and is currently working
on a dissertation analyzing various models for string academies. He spearheaded
the creation on C4A's String Academy, and coordinates that program.
Tatiana & Pavel
RK: So, how did you guys meet?
AJ: After I finished my undergrad at Bowling Green State University in Ohio I stayed
an extra year to work on an artist's diploma. Tatiana came to the school that year
to study with the piano teacher there, and we were paired up to play a recital.
We started out playing well together--we were a good match as an ensemble--and it
just kept getting better!
TS: We started playing together in October, 2006 and had our first kiss on Valentine's
Day.
Their duo career has come a long way since that first kiss; in 2010 they received
a second prize at the Premio Alberto Gori International Competition in Sarteano,
Italy, and in October 2011 they were invited to perform at the Liszt-Garrison Festival
and International competition in Baltimore, Maryland, where they received an award
and honorary memberships in the American Liszt Society.
In addition to playing together, Tatiana and Aaron each play a lot individually
in the local music community and beyond.
Tatiana does a quite a bit of accompanying, especially for UIUC School of Music
recitals. In fall of 2012 she performed at Carnegie Hall during the American Romantic
Music Project, and this past March she performed the world premiere of John Nichol's
piano concerto the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts after winning the 20th
Century Piano Commission Competition at the University of Illinois.
Aaron is very active as an orchestral player, holding titled seats in the Champaign-Urbana
Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera, The Prairie Ensemble, and Jacksonville Symphony.
This load is a bit lighter than the 11 orchestras he performed with during his
first year in town, and he is happy to be sticking closer to home and working with
his studio of violin students at C4A.
RK: Do you have any thoughts you'd particularly like to share with our readers?
AJ: Someone asked me once if there were any students I dislike teaching. I really
can't say that there are--they are all so unique and interesting. We love the atmosphere
here at C4A, because it is so conducive to positive learning and teaching, and we
feel free to do that. We're really happy to be here!
TS: It has become home for us. I love each student!
RK: How did you each start playing music?
TS: I grew up in St. Petersburg, Russia. When I was about 3 years old they gave
my kindergarten class an aptitude test and learned that I have perfect pitch, so
I was encouraged to study piano.
AJ: My mom is an oboist, and wanted me to study an instrument. I picked violin.
RK: And what about Pavel? What will he play?
TS: We wonder...will he have perfect pitch?
AJ: We'll see what he wants to do..
TS: But of course he will study piano!
AJ: Or violin!! Seriously, we plan to form a positive association with music for
him--actually he's getting it right now in the womb--and see where it takes him.
But obviously he'll be a genius!
