this email from Manni to the sdas list refers to the setback of the uprising
in Ecuador (for a moment, thousands of people took over the country,
installing a 3 person junta, including a representative of indigenous
people, which then stepped down so that the vice president could take over,
bowing to threats from the US (a popular uprising isn't considered
'democratic' enough))

Despite my knowing that things are as they are, I can't help
being angry and saddened that the poor people of Ecuador have
been stopped before they really started (like the people of
Chiapas), and that everything happened as I feared it would.
For all of us it has been reaffirmed, once again, that no
country has a chance to change their socio/economic structures
or to create new ones, least of all the countries of Latin
America, as long as the United States is in a position of
control in this world. For although it is global finance and
transnational corporations that are the beneficiaries of this
control, it is the United States government that acts on their
behalf and supplies the military might to protect their interests
 their interests.

Excuse this emotional outburst. It started building up after I
heard the Bishop of Quito last night on BBC saying he wanted to
use BBC to let the world know that it was threats from United
States that had ended the hopes of the people of Ecuador.

I was reminded of something said by William H. Taft (27th
president of the US) in 1912. I quoted him as a motto for an
article I once wrote on Nicaruaga:

"The day is not far distant when three Stars and Stripes at
three equidistant points will mark our territory: one at the
North Pole, another at the Panama Canal, and the third at the
South Pole. The whole hemisphere will be ours in fact as, by
virtue of our superiority of race, it already is ours morally."

That was in the good old days. Now the stars and stripes are
no longer needed to mark the territory of the whole hemisphere
 that in fact is "ours".......

                                       .....................Manni
