FREE-TO-BE-MEDIA MIDWEST!!!

POTENTIAL PROJECT GOAL: Two versions of Champaign-Urbana S26 coverage, in
the audio medium, for broadcast on WEFT 90.1 FM, and (hopefully) other
local radio stations.

	I. SHORT VERSION: 45 secs. to 1:30.

Voiceover summary of day's events and purpose of S26. Sound bite from
QUAD ACTION, sound bite from TEACH-IN/FORUM. needs to be neatly packed
and contextualized so that airshifters don't need to do ANY set-up
whatsover.

II. LONGER VERSION: 5 to 7 minutes. could include:

Interviews with passersby at quad action.
interview with a radical cheerleader.
audio of actual quad action performances--broadcast quality, please!!
eyewitness reporter accounts of quad performances
interview with State Dept./UIUC suits at Foellinger Hall.
audio from prague, soundbites of other cities' S26 organizers.
good, summarizing clips from teach-in
interview with teach-in organizer(s)
good, summarizing clips from Election 2000 Forum.

these longer version clips could be organized and ID'd on a CD-R with a
short accompanying text for airshiter to do set-up, but probably will not
have voiceovers (too much studio time). informed air-shifters who wanted
to do a feature on S26 could preview the disc, use on-air whatever portion
of the disc they wanted to, but would probably have to do their own
"STORYBOARDING" or "SEGUE COPY."

RESOURCES:

2 portable mini-disc recorders + accompanying portable mics. (Danielle's
and Mark Enslin's)

2 portable cassette recorders + accompanying portable mics. (Peter
Miller's and Mike Lehman's)

minidisc (4 hours total!!) of TEACH-IN/FORUM.

PERSONNEL NEEDS!!:

*2-4 persons who want to be "AUDIO JOURNALISTS" at S26 events.

they would:

collect and index audio.
conduct interviews.
report to the audio editing crew what selections of the tape/disc they
make is CHOICEST FOR BROADCAST! this part is EXTREMELY important, as the
audio editors CANNOT wade through 5-6-7 hours of raw material!!!

*ONE knowlegeable person to listen to the whole 4 hours of teach-in and
forum, noting good potential soundbites and their approximate times. a
stopwatch will be provided.

*2 people to take part in the BOILING DOWN of rough-cut audio from
approximately 1 hr. provided by audiojournalists, first to approx 5
minutes, then to about 1 min. with voiceover. this needs to get done on
WEDNESDAY during the day, as our first broadcast opportunity is Wednesday
evening at 8 PM.

this team will be using the latest digital audio editing software, and
will be trained by me how to do the technical end of making these radio
segments air-shifter-friendly. this does NOT mean that i claim any
authority over EDITORIAL CONTENT decisions. i just splice tape, in the
digital domain.

*ONE person to be the VOICEOVER voice.

*ONE knowledgeable POINT-PERSON to make sure that our hard work is getting
broadcast as frequently as possible on WEFT (and maybe even other
stations).

respond to <herringb at prairienet.org> to volunteer.

sincerely,
paul kotheimer
