The Pulitzer Prizes this year were dominated by the Sept. 11 attacks,
with The New York Times winning seven and The Washington Post winning two.
The Wall Street Journal won the breaking news prize for publishing broad
coverage on Sept. 12 of the attacks, after the collapse of the World Trade
Center destroyed the newspaper¹s offices. The Los Angeles Times also won
two prizes. Twelve of the 14 prizes went to four of the largest and
richest papers, all published in New York, Washington and Los Angeles.

Among the awards, which are administered by Columbia University, were
also seven arts prizes, including the biography award to David McCullough
for his book on John Adams. Clay Bennett of The Christian Science Monitor
won the editorial cartooning prize, and the criticism award went to the
Newsday music critic, Justin Davidson.
