Pastimes

If asked what he is going to write
in the evening of the night before,
he closes his eyes and deeply sighs
of themes not yet called to thought.

It will be of politics, he thinks,
saying to the many how to be led --
how they struggle for small living,
but throw it away for fool's gold.

It'll be of love, too, so they live
to learn that little else matters,
not the clothes and car and house,
not even the food nor the drink.

Books matter, and thinking does too,
the company of some loving friend,
pastimes that cause soul to shine,
even writing, in a pinch, will do.

And, when words have lost their ways,
there's always silence to enjoy,
the peace of nature shifting herself,
to settle comfortably in its rule.
