[Newspoetry] Daring yourself to death

There's a place or two
I dare not go,
I dare not go again,
not to where I've been.
not for why I left.

To there ever I turn back,
turn back and ever return,
in only my straying thoughts,
come back to now and then.

I dare not go,
and yet I dare defy,
the pain of remembering
what made me laugh and cry,
and miss what never was.

What was was missing me,
before I knew its loss
in a moment not yet done,
a moment of hiding in fear,
from taking on, going on,
going ever on from me.

Better to be an idol,
sitting on a shelf,
collecting motes of dust,
mites of might have beens,
than to be bound,
rebound in a place,
an old book shelved.
