Words Worth Play:

A lass, poor Yorick!

I knew her too well!

See this open mouth?

My words spurt there!

My head parts her lips.

Call me head-strong.

Gist: literacy among college graduates drops from a shocking 40% to 31%
(!!!!!!!!) since 1992.

Why Our Poetry is Dying

A Glut of Uncut-e Tongues:

The printed word is passé.

Sing a song of six-pence, or

Sing the Three-Penny Opera?

No, No -- sing me Big $ Rich.

Reason is once more visceral,

Just as it generally has been,

Throughout mankind’s history.

Reason appears at the movies,

Now playing, as violent revenge.

It’s but a Shakespearian world,

Waiting for a language update.

Motives no longer reflect values

That are universal or even noble,

Just a pre-im-posterous vanity.

Chasing after the other’s body,

Mostly for sake of eye appeal:

This is always ever no different.

Reading and writing are arts

Of brand labels and slogans;

Literacy tests should adapt.

Playwrights and poets, tho,

Would do well to pay heed,

to stop writing in its tracks.

Culture makes by contrasts:

It functions by its antecedents,

Re-appearing refracted, renew.

We need our Mother’s Goose!

To hang it high when we cook;

Chef sings mi-oh-mi, too loose!

Mr. Hinky: Hi-di-hi, to the Book?

Potpourri is now a potty purring.
