We all know it comes down to that,

there is always a death scene, at the end of a play -

Ever epilogues start in obituaries,

to think of that finality, to take its true measure.

 

It's as if we wait for death, to be sure,

At last, that we have the possibility of the final word,

Though literary critics will not shut up,

As long as anyone will listen to what they have to say.

 

There is no last word,

Just as none were first --

There is only order we give,

If we chose to impose order,

Order is what pleases us,

To give as we see fit.

 

What we never understand, quite,

Is an order that we do not give,

But one which we live, anyway.

 

Vonnegut might have said that,

But he died, anyway.
