U.S. vs. Don Emerick

 
The rift widens. What he hears in his language astonishes him.
On NPR the war is becoming unpopular four years too late.
The talking heads rattle their dentures.
Is this war a mistake?
His fist impales the snooze button: War is a mistake.
Six minutes later: How will we end the war? they ask
His fist impales the snooze button: We will end war.
Six minutes later: How should nuclear weapons be used?
His fist impales the snooze button: Nuclear weapons should be 
dismantled safely.
Waking up is hard to do.
Groggily, toothbrush in hand, he cranks on the bathroom faucet.
Shiny red blood splatters in the sink.

The INS has slipped a notice under his door. He is to be deported to 
Nutopia.
I HAVE NOT BEEN SO SCARED SINCE THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS.
I won't be going to Fort Benning this year, he types, or performing in 
the benefit concert with Dylan.

He has stayed up for a week trying to find a viable poetic.
Newspoetry became impossible in the millennium.
A sense of humor unobtainable through any logical proof.
Hypocrises too obvious to be worth pointing out to any literate reader.

It got worse in 2004.
He'd like to blame electronic voting machines
but can't ignore the possibility that people actually voted
for Bush, and knew what they were doing.
That they like the war, and even like the thin lies told to them.
They like the murder, they like to know it's murder,
but want to be able to pretend they think it’s liberating the people of 
Iraq
and their weapons of mass destruction
from ties to Al-Queda to prevent another 911.
And that Joseph Wilson should never have spoken out against his boss.

Does it mean his friendly neighbors,
cashiers, cousins have murder in them?

They know Uncle Sam is a violent alcoholic, probably in jail,
but they say to each other "he's a fun-loving to a fault, out having a 
good time,"
in case the neighbors are listening.

Who, then, is newpoetry for?

WAR-MONGERS AND WAR-MOGULS.

PARA-PSYCHOTIC MASS MURDERS.

FOOLS, IDIOTS AND PSYCHOelePHANTS.

 Is it any wonder than, that he is the last living activist?

Bush calls for a hat trick: losing three wars at the same time.
His handler has bought him an A Flock of Seagulls single,
so he can practice his pronunciation: "Iran so far away."

 WHAT WOULD THE LAUNCH OF YET ANOTHER AGGRESSIVE WAR, IN UTTER 
DISREGARD OF AND TOTAL VIOLATION OF INTERNATIONAL LAW, MEAN, IN TERMS 
OF PROBABLE SCENARIOS? I ASSUME, AS LEAKS INDICATE, THIS ATTACK WILL 
OCCUR WITH ISRAELI PARTICIPATION, POSSIBLY AS AN EFFORT TO CREATE AN 
INTERMEDIATE PROVOCATION.

 The NPR spokesman is uneasy about this new development.
He'll have to repeat the possibility every morning
so we can all get used to the murderous absurdity.
Leading Democrats will not oppose a wider war:
a worldwide catastrophe might earn them an extra vote.

 In antagonizing Iran, an expert bleats, a misstep could have grave 
consequences. His open mouth drools Clausewitz's metaphor. Killing 
children could have grave consequences. For the killers. If they aren't 
careful.

 He will have this conversation with everybody he meets:

"I am opposed to killing children."
"So am I! But-"
It has become controversial to oppose killing. Unpatriotic, 
unreasonable, suicidal.

FIRST, THE GOVERNMENTS OF QUASI-ALLIES WILL FALL IN EGYPT, SAUDI 
ARABIA, LEBANON, TURKEY, PAKISTAN, IRAQ, AND MAYBE IN INDONESIA. WE 
WILL HAVE MADE BIN LADEN'S DREAM COME TRUE - UNITING THE ARAB AND THE 
MUSLIM WORLDS AGAINST US.

If anything happens to me, Don says, it won't be an accident.

ADVANCED MLITARY WEAPONRY, INCLUDING NUCLEAR ONES, WILL FALL

INTO THE HANDS OF SUCH MILITANTS AND THEIR USE WILL SOON FOLLOW, EVEN 
IF AMERICA DOES NOT INITIATE FIRST USE - THOUGH I EXPECT BATTLE FIELD 
COMMANDERS WILL FINALLY ACTIVATE THEIR BUSH-GRANTED LICENSE TO GO 
NUCLEAR IN WAR THEATERS, AS US FORCE POSITIONS COLLAPSE AND FORCE 
DECIMATION (SLAUGHTER) BECOMES THE ORDER OF THE DAY.

He misses the secret wars of the 1980s, when killing seemed shameful.
When they fed Iran and Iraq weapons and let them kill each other.
But this Bush, he is a superman. He gives the budget back to the 
wealthy and then decides, the treasury running on fumes, we'll fight 
the Iran-Iraq war, the Korean war, and the Soviet-Afghan war ourselves 
on four simultaneous fronts. And if we start to lose, we'll find yet 
another enemy and double our bet.

NEEDLESS TO SAY, WORLD MARKETS WILL COLLAPSE, AS ENERGY PRICES SOAR AND 
UNCERTAINTY EXCEEDS EVERY BOUND OF IMAGINATION. ECONOMIC COLLAPSES WILL 
SOON FOLLOW AS WORLD TRADE AND ECONOMY CAN NOT ABSORB SUCH A VIOLENT 
JOLT.

GOVERNMENTS IN EUROPE AND WEST ASIA WILL EXPERIENCE MASSIVE DOMESTIC 
UNREST AND RIOTS.

ISRAEL WILL BE OVERWHELMED AND MOST OF HER MILLIONS OF JEWS SLAUGHTERED.

This won't be another Vietnam. This will be so bad it ends Vietnam 
Syndrome and supplants it with a sharper trauma.

RECOVERY - IF IT EVER BECOMES POSSIBLE - WILL ONLY BE UNDER THE HANDS 
OF CHINA, JAPAN, INDIA.

There's a reason he's feared nuclear weapons his whole life.

I FEAR THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE AS I HAVE BUT ONCE BEFORE FEARED IT.

He wanted newspapers to be pureed and poured into his ear canal.
But ink is toxic, living through another Cuba. 

On the White House lawn is a mountain of American tongues
the ones that have been cut out of our mouths. Iran? Nuclear weapons?
What the fuck? we whisper to our lovers, curtains drawn.
