[Newspoetry] Quack, like a duck?

Quack.

 

What the duck said?

 

The duck quacked.

 

That's not it, I thought --

That's not what the duck said,

That's just saying the duck spoke,

But what did he say when he spoke?

 

I can't quack like a duck,

Or laugh like a nerd,

Or sing Berryman-icon style;

I can't even sing, happily,

As others would say,

Or even sing at all.

 

Quack, quack.

 

What did I just say?

 

There are ways to imagine what was said,

When you hear sounds and know them not.

 

You could supply a theme, or them, too,

Give them some lives to live,

Give them sounds to resound within,

Or let them be some dumb recording,

Playing back the echoes, faithfully,

Having never a new thought to own at all,

Except to be a ducking dummy,

A copy-quack who never speaks back.

 

Quack, quack, quack.
