Mullah Al Fayad heard Reb El speaking,

For words pierce walls as well as hearts.

He waited patiently, in the dusty streets,

In the curling heat of a long hot evening.

Finally, he saw Reb El leaving the shul,

Dim as the sleight of its day had become,

Tricking the mind as it fixed its image.

Said M. Al Fayad to Reb El, in passing:

"Is it not written, Shema? Is it, Echad?"

The good that man makes is not one,

That is true, all too true, always true.

But the One is yet One and only One,

And that kind of good is additive, Reb."

And, Reb El, what did he then do?

He fell down and dusted himself off;

But Al Fayad lifted him up, in hope.

"Still," observed Mullah Al Fayad,

"It is right to say evil ever grows

Because evil feeds upon every act,

Seeking to take away all goodness,

All that is life, divided as it may be."
