Letter to NY Times reporter Mark Mazetti et al.

Questions
<http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/26/world/middleeast/26military.html> Linger
on Scope of Iran's Threat to Iraq

Could you please report, by a follow-up story, on these questions?

What is the composition of the numerous arms caches found in Iraq by US
military forces? What percentages of those weapons, for instance, derive
from identifiable Iranian sources? What parts of these weapons are simply
due to armaments that have "leaked" away from parties being armed by various
US sources?

That is the real question -- behind the surge's alleged success. Was it
wise US policy to beef up the supplies of war materials --- both arms and
money --- to various groups in Iraq that are now nominally and temporarily
"pacified"?

Was an Op-Ed writer in the NY Times right recently when he hinted that the
various insurgency movements in Iraq have been simply exploiting the
opportunity, to re-arm and re-finance their movements?

Isn't talk of a linkage to Iranian arms an effort to focus attention away
from these main causes for the imminent resulting explosion of violence, the
tip of which has so recently emerged?

Notice how Mr. Maliki has been asserting that only the State may lawfully be
armed, as a group. Notice how Ms. Rice supported that assertion last week,
while in Baghdad. If such a policy were "successfully implemented",
wouldn't an armed dictatorship return to Iraq, as the most probable outcome
of the policy?

(Paradoxically, notice how the parallel question in the United States -- on
an individual's right to keep and bear arms -- is answered, vigorously, by
the NRA, to the contrary!!! Surprisingly, the NRA sees no threat to its
policy positions from the opposite practice taken by the Bush gang in Iraq!)

Sincerely,
DL Emerick
