REUTERS: A British artist is planning to record the sound of silence in
radio broadcasts and sell the recording as a collector's item. Matt
Rogalsky plans to spend 24 hours monitoring the BBC's flagship
current-affairs channel Radio 4 on Dec. 12, collecting the gaps between
the words with his custom-designed software. "The silences I am
collecting are actually full of tiny sounds, which normally go
unobserved," Rogalsky said in a statement. The finished piece, entitled
S, will consist of 24 audio CDs, with each holding the collected
silences from one hour of the day's broadcast. But those seeking 24
hours of carefully distilled peace and quiet are in for a shock: The
limited-edition boxed set will sell for $674.
