MADRID (Spain): Police here smashed the local operations of the =93Nigerian=
Letter=94 scam that reaped up to 20 million euros (RM75.2mil) by duping In=
ternet chat enthusiasts and other victims into paying seed money for access=
to safety deposit boxes supposedly full of dollars, the government said We=
dnesday.
Spanish police arrested five Nigerians, a British man, a Spanish woman and =
a minor whose nationality was not disclosed, the Civil Guard said.
Most of the 300-plus victims lived in the United States, Germany, Australia=
 or France.
Members of the gang picked targets in Internet chatrooms, e-mail exchanges =
and sometimes just by opening telephone books at random, officials said.
Members billed themselves as working for companies that represented relativ=
es of a prominent African with up to US$75mil (RM285mil) stored in safety d=
eposit boxes in Spain.
The trick was to get people to hand over money on the pretext of paying off=
a debt owed to the security company overseeing those boxes, the Civil Guar=
d said. Victims believed they would get 25% of the take once a strong box w=
as opened.
The organisation paid to fly some of its victims to Spain, took them to bog=

an enticement, the Civil Guard said.

laint.

Oh well, at least I'm still getting that fat check from newspoetry.com ever=
