Hi everyone,
A recent survey of public attitudes toward freedoms of press, speech,
and religion was released last week by the First Amendment Center
(www.freedomforum.org/first). The survey, conducted by the Center
for Survey Research & Analysis at U. Conn. on a random sample of 1000
respondents, documented a 10-percentage-point increase from last year
in the belief that the 1st amendment "goes too far" in the rights it
guarantees (39% in 2001 v. 49% in 2002).
You can read the press release,

or the full report,

ps. Both this year and last, the sampling error was +/-3%, so maybe
the jump isn't as bad as it looks. On the other hand, maybe it's worse.
pps. And while we're on the topic of freedom, academic or otherwise:
LSU sacked Dr S.J.Hatfill (named a person-of-interest in the FBI's
anthrax investigation), with little apparent justification.
