Dear Editor:

Thank you for the editorial, “Getting past the
propaganda,” (April 14). As the US Administration
turns its sights on Syria and Iran, it’s more
important than ever to remember how flimsy its excuses
for invading Iraq turned out to be. Even more
important, however, is the reality of that invasion as
it unfolded.

Even self-proclaimed “liberals” like Elliot Kolkovich
and David Marin (April 14) easily overlook the
humanitarian disaster that is following in the wake of
US “liberation” of Iraq, and Afghanistan before it.
The fact that the Administration’s new budget
completely left out aid to the “have-nots” in
Afghanistan apparently means little, right along with
the fact that UN agencies and the Red Cross have been
“alarmed” by the number of Iraqi civilian casualties
(AFP 4/4/03) and the fact that the Red Cross announced
casualties “too high to count,” (AP, 4/9/03). Many
thousands of Iraqis have now been “liberated” from
their families, homes or jobs, if not their very
lives.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan has descended into the same
deadly chaos of starvation and brutality that followed
the previous US intervention there. “It’s like seeing
the same movie twice,” according to President Hamid
Karzai’s brother (New York Times, 4/11/03). This,
apparently, is what Iraq has to look forward to --
what US “liberation” looks like.
