It is interesting to read past letters in this paper that criticize and/or
attack local protesters and others opposed to the US war in Iraq. So far
not one letter has factually addressed the main points of disagreement.
Not one has disputed the fact that the United States played a key role in
supporting Saddam Hussein until the first Gulf Warand that the US
government has supported and continues to support many of the worst human
rights abusing nations of the world. Not one has disputed that people
personally and politically connected to Bush and Cheney will profit
immensely from rebuilding Iraq. Not one addressed the progress that the
latest UN inspections were making before the war. And not one letter has
addressed the complete lack of a connection between Husseins Iraq and Al
Queda and the events of 9/11. 

Instead critics of the antiwar movement rely on calls to support our
troops or claims that the US is liberating Iraq. Since supporters of the
war refuse to address the lies, contradictions and hypocrisies of US
foreign policy regarding this war against Iraq, one can only conclude that
the flag-waving backers of this war would support any US-led warno matter
how illegal, immoral and unjust. Frankly, this kind of jingoistic
patriotism weakens our democracy, make us less secure in the world, and
puts the lives of people in our armed forces at unecessary risk.
