CPS Plans 'Day of Discussion' on Iraq, Terrorism

Schools Encouraged to Host Student/Community Forums on Friday, Feb. 21

In an effort to give students and community members a chance to discuss the issues and concerns
surrounding the threat of a terrorist attack and the possibility of a war with Iraq, the CPS is
organizing a "Day of Discussion" at its schools on Friday, Feb. 21.

Schools are being encouraged to set aside time during that school day to host forums where students,
parents, and community members can discuss their views on security issues and the situation in Iraq. The
CPS will make counselors and other support personnel available to schools that request assistance in
addressing student and community concerns.

"These are the issues that are on everybody's minds right now," CPS Chief Executive Officer Arne Duncan
said. "We all have our own opinions and concerns, and we want to give our students and their families an
opportunity to get together and share their thoughts and hear what other people have to say."

The schools will organize and schedule the forums on their own. The CPS administration is just asking
schools to make sure they include students in the discussions and to allow for views on all sides of the
debates to be expressed. The CPS Office of Communications will keep a schedule of the forums that are
organized at the schools.

The Chicago Public Schools is the nation's third-largest school district and the second-largest employer
in Illinois, with more than 43,000 employees. The school system operates 600 schools and serves 437,000
students.
