Dr Ruth Wasem is Social Legislation Specialist and team leader of the Immigration Issues Team of the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress. She holds a PhD in history of University of Michigan. Her research interests are domestic social policy, federal employment policy, and immigration and citizenship policy. She has authored numerous publications on community capacity to support human services, adolescent pregnancy, non-marital childbearing, welfare reform, asylum, citizenship and naturalization, employment-based immigration, legal immigration, temporary foreign workers, and Western Hemisphere migration.

The Migration Studies Group in cooperation with the Transnational Seminar of the Dept. of Sociology will welcome Dr. Ruth Wasem of the Congressional Research Service next Friday, Oct 31, 3-5 pm in Lincoln Hall 336, to speak on :

US Immigration Policy in the Wake of September 11: Pushing out the Borders
The Patriot Act and Immigrant Communities

Dr. Wasem is a leading researcher for the Congressional Research Service on immigration policy and has also authored numerous reports on social policy in the past ten years.  She is visiting the campus thanks to a grant from the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, and support from the Dept. of Sociology and the Program on Women and Gender in Global Perspectives.
