Another strong letter by Matt, appearing yesterday in the News Gazette. (He's too modest to post them.) cpi
Lets set the record straight. The war in Iraq has nothing to do with bringing democracy to the Middle East. The Bush administration hates democracy. The evidence is overwhelming: His campaign stole the 2000 election by having Jeb Bush, governor of Florida, intentionally purge thousands of qualified African-American voters. The administration backed an attempted coup against the elected government in Venezuela over a year ago, and assisted with this years coup against the elected president of Haiti. The Bush administration completely backs the dictator of Uzbekistan, one of the worlds worst human rights violators, because he supports US military plans in central Asia. The administration also supports our "ally," military dictator of Pakistan, Gen. Musharraf. In Palestine, the Bush administration opposes any democratic rights for Palestinians, instead backing Israeli occupation and land seizures. Meanwhile at home, the Bush administration fights democracyfrom denying legal rights
to people arrested on "terrorism" suspicions to conducting secret talks with energy companies on structuring our nations energy policy.
What is clear is that Bushs Iraq war is all about the expansion of power and profitpower for both the executive branch and the US military and huge profits for corporations ready to exploit the devastated infrastructure of Iraq. Bush and the mainstream media keep repeating the lie that this war is about "freedom" and "democracy." Of course they also promoted the start of this war with claims about Iraqs WMDs and its connections to Al-Qaidaboth now proven to have been complete lies.
