Editorial Instructions for Reporters
New York Times
Leonard M. Apcar, Editor in Chief

1) Take data from right wing corporate sources, but
insert the vocabulary, and allusions to past events,
necessary to make it sound vaguely progressive.

2) Make sure to keep at least a few progressive
articles buried in the pile, and an occasional
editorial by Krugman so as to make it seem like the
New York Times has not become a mouth piece for
Republicans.

3) Always show Bush to advantage and Kerry to
disadvantage. How much more Bush spends on a bike than
Kerry, picture of Bush with African Americans, Kerry
with whites.

4) Present Republicans and Democrats as part of a
natural political spectrum even when the Republican is
an extremist and the Democrat extremely moderate.

5) Never interview or refer to alterative media. Never
interview or refer to conservative groups such as
Libertarians that are not part of the G.O.P. network.

6) Compare Bush with Reagan and Clinton when
discussing the prospects for election. Compare Kerry
with Carter and Dukakis.

7) Always put the kernel of critical analysis in the
last paragraph of the article.

8) Use all the vocabulary of critical analysis but
never ask the most fundamental questions concerning
the possible motivations of political figures.

9) Write at great length about the exploitation of
workers, public safety risks, pollution and repression
in China, India, and the Third World. Never suggest
any parallel with what is happening in the United
States.

10) Ask all the conservative PR Think Tanks to write
stories which could be used by the New York Times
preferably in the New York Times format.

11) Refine headlines and frame key first paragraphs
on the front page to make Kerry look bad and Bush look
much better by using innuendoes and similes such as
Kerry's style resembles ... .

12) Encourage Maureen Dowd to use her vicious attack
style more on Kerry and Teresa as she did for Gore.
Only two put-downs for Teresa seems very deficient.

13) Attack the Washington Post indirectly to allow
deniability because the latter has been too truthful
in its front page stories about Bush and Kerry. Create
doubt.

14) Write many one sentence paragraphs with no
continuity so anyone going to the jump page will have
difficulty ferreting out the important facts often
hidden there.

15) Increase the usage of the Heritage Foundation
News generating computer to write stories in the New
York Times format so it is possible flood dubious news
stories to overwhelm Kerry's Truth Squad.

16) Increase usage of the RNC news bulletins as you
used frequently during the Gore campaign to lie about
Gore's so-called truthful lies.

17) Avoid confirming negative stories about Kerry.
Print them immediately.

18) Use more official Pentagon Special Plans
intelligence stories to increase fear of the voters
towards violence so they will be afraid to change
leaders during a crisis.

19) Since we have not seen Rumsfeld recently, it is
likely he is working on his "Proactive, Preemptive
Operations Group" (P2OG) to encourage terror attacks
before the election. Pre-write headline stories before
it occurs so it can be put immediately on the web with
plenty of scary details.

20) Keep repeating what Bush says about Kerry in
front page news stories, editorials, Op-Ed page, and
Arts and Sports section so readers will not miss it.
