Statement from Governor Jennifer M. Granholm on Electrolux Decision to Move Jobs Out of Michigan
---------------------------------

Electrolux’s decision today is heart-wrenching news for the City of Greenville and the State of Michigan. I could not be more disappointed that the company ultimately chose cheap, foreign wages over a highly-skilled American workforce with fair wages and quality health care.

This decision for the company was purely a financial one. The United Auto Workers, who represent the Electrolux workforce, put an enormously generous plan on the table to keep the company in Greenville that included changes in the UAW labor agreement that would have yielded $31.6 million annually. The City and State also made extremely generous offers to invest in the company financially. The City’s offer included free land fully developed and a plant that would be built, financed and leased back to Electrolux by a private developer at a competitive rate. The State offered an incentive and tax credit program worth up $121 million, including a Renaissance Zone that would allow the company to operate virtually free of state and local taxes for up to 20 years.

In the end, however, the company’s financial demands were too great and they turned down our strongest offers. I applaud the Electrolux workforce for its selflessness and the community for its far-sighted vision.
