BIO
Sulak Sivaraksa, born 1933, is a prominent Thai intellectual and social
critic. He is a teacher, a scholar, a publisher, an activist, the
founder of many organizations, and the author of more than a hundred
books and monographs in both Thai and English (with titles such as
Loyalty Demands Dissent and Alternative Politics for Asia). In 1984 he
was arrested in Bangkok on charges of criticizing the King, but
international protest led to his eventual release. In 1991 another
warrant was issued for his arrest and he went into political exile but
won the court case in 1995. In 1995 he was granted the Right Livelihood
Award, also known as Alternative Nobel Prize. He is co-founder of the
Asian Cultural Forum on Development and the International Network of
Engaged Buddhists. In Thailand he has been active in many social and
environmental movements such as the Assembly of the Poor. He is known
for his criticisms of consumerism and of the social engineering approach
in activism. For a complete bio (and downloads of speeches) see
