>Dear Karen,

> Because AWARE promotes human rights and strives to end
>racism and war I thought the following would be of particular
>interest.
>
> I am writing AWARE in the hopes for a partnership in
>confronting the rape, slaughter, starvation, torture, and
>displacement that is presently occurring in the Darfur region
>of Sudan, the largest country in Africa. In just over two
>years, the Sudanese Government and its paramilitary allies
>have killed more than 400,000 people, driven 2.5 million from
>their homes, and left 3.5 million without the food they need
>to sustain themselves. The victims are being persecuted
>solely because of their race. The UN has called Sudan the
>worst humanitarian crisis in the world today and the United
>States has declared that the genocide in Sudan has made the
>Darfur region a “near hell on Earth”.
>
> I am the president of Action Darfur, a student
organization that creates awareness, takes political action,
and raises funds for the victims of the genocide in Darfur,
Sudan. We want to bring the campus together for a weeklong
series of events focusing on the crisis in Darfur. The
events will take place February 19-23 and centers around a
keynote address from Simon Deng who escaped slavery in Sudan
and is an expert on the current events unfolding in
Darfur.
>
> If, as an organization, you feel as compelled to confront
>this crisis as we do, you can help by co-sponsoring an event
>with Action Darfur and/or planning your own event concerning
>Darfur in February. In either case, I would love to discuss
>further ways AWARE can get involved. I know this is a busy
>week, but if you can meet anytime with me this week or after
>break I would greatly appreciate it.
>
> Sincerely,
> Brian Schwartz
