AWARE Minutes – 2/13/2005

1. News of the Week

2. Introductions (about 25 present)

3. New ideas:

Agreed to sponsor Medea Benjamin (Global Exchange,
Code Pink), being brought by Prairie Greens on 2/22.

Public Square—Susan Davis and Lisa Chason will
coordinate efforts to write/submit more pieces to
WILL.

Claudia Lenhoff (Champaign County Healthcare
Consumers) has been invited by Susan Davis to speak at
an AWARE meeting in March regarding issues relevant to
war/racism.

Norman Finkelstein—David Green has extended an
invitation for him to speak on campus in late March
early April regarding his response to Alan
Dershowitz’s The Case for Israel
(www.normanfinkelstein.com). Perhaps a long shot, but
worth a try.

Carol Inskeep reports that the Eyes Wide Open exhibit
is in the process of gathering more funds to continue
their work—we are on their list for future locales,
and we have raised $1,000 toward their visit.

CU Peace and Justice needs volunteers for Forgiveness
Weekend this weekend.

Mosaic is being shown on UPTV Tuesday through Friday
at 9:30, if things go as expected. Democracy Now has
been airing with no glitches for the past couple of
weeks.

Obama/Durbin watch: Obama voted in favor of moving
class actions suits from state to federal courts,
which is a way of killing them.

United for Peace and Justice—Mort Brussel still has
room for one colleague for this weekend in St. Louis.

4. Past week

Police Review Board meeting was well attended—momentum
is building toward this.

Ivan Ruiz was acquitted on Friday of all charges.

David Green acquitted himself well at his talk
regarding Richard Herman, the DI, anti-semitism,
racism, etc. on Monday evening, but still feels guilty
because of his Jewish mother. The talk was taped and
will be edited for WEFT in near future, but don’t tell
his mother.
