FYI: Sent this off today. mkb

On January 8, a contingent of local army reservists will be preparing
to go to Iraq. The community, their families and friends all hope for
their safe return, sound in mind and body, but we fear, and evidence
pathetically confirms, the contrary.
On May 1, 2003, under the banner “Mission Accomplished”, George Bush
boasted of the end to major combat in Iraq. The war has since
escalated, with growing American casualties, the unrelenting
destruction of Iraqi cities and towns, and the deaths and horrible
injuries of countless thousands of innocent civilians. What mission
accomplished? What of our justifications?
No WMD’s found, no links to 9/11 verified, no democracy or security
for Iraqis established. Meanwhile, our civil liberties, our environment
and our economic well being are degraded by this ill conceived and
bogus “war on terrorism”. Our nation’s reputation is soiled by
revelations of torture, subterfuge, and callousness, while the world
becomes ever more hostile to American power, aims and influence. It
seems clear to all but the most oblivious that the reason that more
Americans must be sent to Iraq is to secure a strategic base in that
oil rich region and to save face so that our government leaders need
admit neither failure nor wrongdoing.
We want to be proud of our country and our armed forces, but how can
we be proud of the atrocities at Abu Graib, the utter destruction of
Falluja and other centers of population? How can we be proud of GI’s
killing helpless Iraqi prisoners and humiliating others? This is a
needless ugly war!
Let us hope that the men and women who leave us now for Iraq return
safely and soon. May they not kill or be killed, not maim or be maimed.
To that end, the American occupation of Iraq must cease.
