dear friends-
I'm sitting behind a laptop in an apartment in southern Germany with a
somewhat unstable internet connection, so I'm not sure this will be
received. I've been able to intermittently check email and websites. 4th
of J looked beautiful!

I love being in Europe. Friends, colleagues and students so interesting
and welcoming. We've hiked and traveled in the region (Black Forest) and
made one trip to see old friends and family in Amsterdam and one longer
trip through Switzerland to Italian Mediterranean. I love the everyday
sense of style and design; the human density and ingenious uses of space;
the normal-ness and ease of recycling and conserving and environmentalism
and alternative health remedies; the good bread; the town beer and wine
festivals; the low-key way people talk, including the tv news
broadcasters; Roman ruins and people talking about the history of the
German tribes as if it's current affairs.

I'm forwarding through a few things that European friends have sent. I
have such a longing for anlo-american power to be checked, so that other
ways of being can be respected and flourish and have influence...
