AWARE Minutes

June 12, 2005

Facilitator: Susan Davis

Minutes: David Green

Time: Al Kagan

1. News of the Week: Impeachment calls up, recruitment
down, class disparities up, progressive urban mayors
elected

2. Introductions: About 20 present

3. New Ideas: T-shirts—David Green was assigned to
discuss with Darrin Drda the possibility of designing
an AWARE T-shirt, especially for use by those doing
tabling, etc. It was suggested that the words
“anti-war” and Urbana-Champaign be included with a
logo; using fewer colors will make it less expensive.
It was suggested that it is important to use a union
shop, which will result in a cost of $25 or so.

4. Working Groups

Finances: $3,038.20

Farmers Market and Taste of Champaign: The table was
not set up at the FM this past Saturday, but will be
back this weekend. The following weekend will be the
Taste of Champaign. Please reply to this e-mail if you
have not expressed an interest in staffing the table,
and wish to. Hours: Friday, June 24, 5-9; Sat., 25th,
10-9; Sunday, 212-5.

Fourth of July Float: Various AWARE members will play
roles enacting the theme of “Billions for War, Pennies
for our Community.” On Monday, June 27th, Ricky
Baldwin will host a rehearsal. Deceptions dollars will
be passed out to the crowd, along with fliers
regarding the Cost of War. Expenses for the float up
to $200 or so were approved by consent. A spontaneous
outbreak of Roberts Rules of Order was quickly put
down.

Counter-recruitment: Meeting this Friday; A cash grant
to a student at Parkland on the basis of an essay was
suggested; this money has not yet been officially
appropriated, this idea will be raised again regarding
specific wording of proposal from Gina Cassidy.

Democracy Now on WILL: Randall Cotton is looking for
some assistance with this project. Petitioning at
Taste of Champaign would be a start.

5. Upcoming Event: Ed Yohnka, ACLU, Wednesday, June
15, Urbana Free Library, 7:00.

6. Past Week’s Events:

Carol Inskeep reported that Ruth Wyman is coordinating
a peace/progressive run/bike event and health expo for
next May, including faith groups such as Mennonite and
Quaker. There are also many religious groups
supporting the next Hiroshima/Nagasaki day event in
August, which will include a broader discussion of the
nuclear issue.

Matt Murrey’s poetry reading at the Urbana Public
Library was lively and well-attended.
