Short 20th Century 1914-1991. This is an edited
extract from his preface to a new edition of VG
Kiernan's America: The New Imperialism 

This note at the bottom of Hobsbawm's article on
Common Dreams refers to a book by V.G. Kiernan, first
published in 1978, which is probably the most concise
and insightful description of the history of U.S.
foreign policy that I have read. If the edition just
out is updated to the present, that would make it even
