Hi Mort--
Thanks for getting this ball rolling.

What I was thinking when we spoke of this at the meeting would resemble
the postcard campaigns we held in 2002/03 around asking Durbin and
Fitzgerald to (1) involve the UN in dealing with WMD/Sadam Hussein and
(2) to not give the president the power to go into Iraq, to act
unilaterally, etc.

What I would imagine now would be a handout on the table that people
could look at to help make their own arguments when they write their
postcards. It could say:

SEND A POSTCARD TO OUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES.
Suggestions of points to make

To Obama: I voted for you in November 2004 because I thought you would
be progressive. You have certainly proven otherwise! Your unquestioning
support of Condoleezza Rice, your statements supporting continued
occupation of Iraq, your support of legislation to limit class action
suits[IS THIS TRUE??], and your alignment with the Democratic Leadership
Council are just some of the examples which make me question where you
stand and who you think you represent. You cannot take the continued
support of people like myself for granted. Please ally yourself with
other progressives in Congress.

To Durbin: I voted for you in the past and I want to express my support
for the progressive positions you have been taking. I especially
appreciate [THEN WE'D HAVE TO PUT A FEW CONCRETE EXAMPLES HERE. PLEASE
HELP!] Please work to end the occupation of Iraq and bring the US troops
home as soon as possible/now. etc, etc.

To Tim Johnson: [SOMETHING]

Other points [THEN I'D PUT YOURS HERE]:
We have decimated Iraq and yet are unable to control events there. It is
a quagmire.

Our moral obligation does not mean imposing our will on the Iraq people.

Some argue that withdrawal from Iraq may result in: civil war,
interference by neighboring states, an Islamic government, division of
the nation. But such possibilities are engendered by U.S. behavior.
There can be no true democracy in Iraq under an American boot; we must
let the Iraqi people find their own way.

Withdrawal from Iraq will eliminate casualties, halt the destruction of
Iraqi society, diminish terrorism, conserve financial resources, and
improve America's standing in the eyes of the world, especially if we
provide reparations for rebuilding Iraq.

These examples are still a lot to fit on a postcard. It's more the idea
to stimulate people to get started writing. It could be enough for
someone to say to Obama "Don't take progressive support for granted."

Lisa

The following is an attempt to produce a postcard for folks to send to
Obama, to be available at our March 19 observance of 2 years of war on
Iraq. Suggestions are sollicited. --mkb

Dear Senator Obama:

Please add your voice to the swelling chorus of those who ask the U.S.
to withdraw its forces from Iraq now.

We have decimated Iraq and yet are unable to control events there. It is
a quagmire.

Our moral obligation does not mean imposing our will on the Iraq people.

Our faith that you would be a progressive acting to stop the aggression
on Iraq has been shaken by your inauspicious approval of our Secretary
of State, statements supporting the continued occupation, and your
alignment with the Democratic Leadership Council. Restore our faith!

Sincerely,
